Kim's Story

Kim was an average guy. He was actually in the military. He was on leave hanging out with some friends when he committed his crime and was arrested.

Unknowing to me Kim was a gang member. He was a TRG (Tiny Rascal Gang). One of the most dangerous Asian gang in Long Beach California.

Apparently when he met up with a few of his old fellow gang buddies they got into a confrontation of some kind with a rival gang Asian Boyz, he did not elaborate on what started it all.

Asian Boyz are a Asian faction of the Crips.

He did not tell me what he did since he was fighting his case. This seemed to be important because there are snitches and everyone had to be careful. I thought that only happened in TV shows like Law and Order where inmates get evidence on other inmates and snitch it to the cops or the DA. I found out about his story after he got sentenced to 25 years to life.

He and his friends went to look for the Asian Boyz who threw something at them earlier in the day. By 11PM there were 2 Asian Boyz lying on the streets dead and another one with a gunshot wound in the head. Kim said he was there but it was self defense and also that he had no gun and did not shoot.

The judge saw it differently and Kim's Military record did not help him a bit. He is currently serving 25 years to life in prison while he is appealing his case.

This kind of story is not that interesting and not uncommon but it was the 1st story I have heard and it was the first time I have talked face to face to a person accused of murder.

Kim looked like he did not belong in jail. He looked like a normal kid. Just a kid.

Kim was fighting to stay out of prison for at least 20 years at 22 years old. Unknown to me there will be a lot of stories like this in the coming months.

Inmate Processing

Arriving at the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Jail to be processed was a nightmare. We were herded like cattle. Stripped of our clothes and given 5 minutes to shower with about 100 other guys and not even given clean towels. It was degrading.

After the processing which took more than 24 hrs, it was time to be housed. Since I had high blood pressure they had me at the Meds section of the jail which happen to be the old part of the jail.

It's just like you see in movies of old. cells on one side and wall with windows high in the air on the other. There were 4 beds but 2 men per cell. It was still cramped. If you were lucky you got a celly that was cool. After a couple of days at Twin Towers I was transferred to the Pitchess Detention Center around 40 miles out side of LA.

We were striped searched and housed. I was house at the East Facility, again the oldest part of the jail. I was in a huge dorm with about 150 other inmates.

No you have to remember this was my first time in jail. I was a lost and honestly scared. I did not know who to trust. When I first went in one of the Asian inmates came to me and introduced himself. He gave me a brief introduction to jail life. There are 4 groups in County Jail. The Blacks, Mexicans, Whites, and others. Being Asian I was considered other. It was very strange to see the if something happened it was most likely that Asians would team up with the blacks. This was strange to me. On the outside there is so much tension between Asians and Blacks. But in jail the tension is there but we help each other out.

There is one group that all Asians should look out for. the South Siders or the Southern Mexicans. These are Mexican gangs from Southern California. They hated everyone even their fellow Mexicans. They were so dangerous they were housed separated from other inmates. The blacks really hated South Siders. Mexicans form Mexico was a separate group and the Mexicans form Northern California was a separate group also. This was all very foreign to me.

Every group has a shot caller or the leader. For the Asians it was a little kid about 5 foot 3 inches with a shaved head wearing glasses. I will call him Kim. Other than the shaved head he looked like a typical college kid. Kim came up to me and showed me which toilet to use which shower to use which phone to use and where to sit to eat the meals. Basically don't fuck with other races stick to your own. You can be friendly with them but DO NOT PROGRAM with them. The use the PROGRAM to describe the day to day life in jail. I thanked him and laid down on my bunk which was a metal bed with a 2 inch foam mattress. It was a triple bunk and since I was a new guy I got the middle bunk.

On top I had a Black whom we will call M and on the bottom there was a Mexican whom we will call J. They were both very cool. After Dinner was handed out the stories of how I and my neighbors landed in County Jail.

I told them my story and they seemed to be very casual about it. they said your a "Non Violent Offender" which is good I guessed. Kim came to me to offer some instant noodles since I had no "canteen". Canteen is stuff you can buy like food, toiletries, writing material etc with the money your family puts in to your account or the money you had on you when you were arrested. I did not know if this offer was free or I was expected to pay him back. So I just said no thank you.

I asked him why he was in here. This was the 1st shocking but not the last story i herd in the East Facility.

Busted.....

I kinda did get away with it. I quite my job and I got another job out of the country and everything was fine. I got busted when I flew in to San Francisco airport. Apprently my former company found out about the accounts and the forged checks and they called LAPD ad they had an arrest warrant on me.

I was busted in immigration check point at SFO and was handded to LA County Sherrif. apperently LA county has a bus that travels up and down the state of california almost everyday picking up people like me.

What I found interesting was that they gave us a Big Mac, fries and a coke for lunch on our way down to LA. Little did I know that was going to be my last good meal for 6 months.

before I got busted...........

Basically the story is that I got busted for stealing money from the company I used to work for. Nothing really too interesting. I will be the first one to tell you that I am guilty. The temptation was too great.

I was in charge of a division of the company where it handled a lot of cash every day, and I was also in charge of all the bank accounts and accounts payable. I probably could have gotten away with it if I didn't get greedy. If I just skimmed the cash no big deal. I mean it was around $1000.00 a day Monday to Friday. But I got greedy and started to write checks payable to my self and a dummy company I set up and I even forged the VP's signature. At the end I was accused of stealing $150.000 over a period of 2 years.

I was sentenced to 1 year in County Jail. I served 6 months and was released with 5 years probation. But this is not a story about how I got to jail. It's about what happened in jail. Now before you let your imagination go wild nothing bad happened to me in jail. I did though meet a lot of people with interesting stories to tell me. This blog is about all those stories that were told to me. Now these stories might not be 100% accurate but it was told to me this way so that is how I will be telling it.
